Game One/Game Two
Colchester, VT -
The Adelphi University softball team traveled to Colchester, Vermont on Saturday, April 9 to play Northeast-10 Conference member Saint Michael's College twice. The Panthers stifled the Purple Knights in game one, 3-1 and out hit them in game two, 8-0. With the sweep Adelphi improves to 11-17 overall and 5-5 in the NE-10.
For Adelphi, senior Shay Craig and sophomore Emily Dorko each cracked two hits, and senior Leighann Bell fired a complete-game five-hitter with four strikeouts in game one.
In the nightcap, senior Deandra Leo clubbed two home runs for three RBIs, and freshman Katie Andrews spun a dominant complete-game one-hitter while striking out 11 batters.
In game one, the Panthers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first and would hold the lead for the remainder of the contest as a Craig single and a Jeanine Leo ground out brought runners across the plate. Saint Michael's halved the deficit in the second on back-to-back singles and a well-placed fielder's choice.
However, Bell shut down the Saint Michael's bats for the rest of the game allowing just two hits in the final five innings, as Courtney Sullivan scored an insurance run on an error in the top of the sixth.
Adelphi scored in all but one inning in game two and rattled off 11 hits, five of which were for extra bases. The Panthers took a 3-0 lead after two frames, taking advantage of a wild pitch in the first and getting two more on Leo's first homer, and an error in the second.
The Brown and Gold scored three runs on three hits in the fourth as Piage Rhodes, Heather Salerno and Amy Ogden all registered RBI's. The Panthers stretched their lead to eight runs on another Leo deep fly in the fifth. On the mound, Andrews was nearly untouchable, and retired all but two batters faced, striking out 11 in her fourth win of the season.
Adelphi returns to action on Sunday, April 10 when they travel to Rindge, New Hampshire to take on Franklin Pierce.
