Game One/Game Two
New Haven, CT -
The Adelphi University softball team traveled to New Haven, Connecticut on Sunday, April 3 to take on Northeast-10 member Southern Connecticut State University. The Panthers offense broke out with 10 total runs, dropping the first game 7-6, but picking up a win in game two, 4-0. With the split Adelphi is now 7-15 overall and 2-4 in the conference.
Game One
Adelphi got on the board first, scoring three runs in the second as a Heather Salerno single and a Amy Ogden double brought three runners across home plate. The Owls took advantage of two run scoring singles in the third to pull within one run, 3-2, before Adelphi pushed the margin back to three runs with RBI's on Shay Craig and Jeanine Leo singles.
Leo pushed the lead to four runs, 6-2 in the top of the seventh when she opened the inning by smacking a home run. However, the four run lead was not enough as SCSU put five runs on the board in the bottom of the seventh, scoring the winning run on a single down the right field line.
Leighann Bell put in 6.1 innings of work, striking out nine, while surrendering 14 hits and allowing seven runs, six earned. Leo led the offense, going 3-4 with two RBI, one run and a home run, while Ogden was 2-4 with two RBI's of her own.
Game Two
Everything seemed to go Adelphi's way in game two, as the Panthers hung three runs on the board in the first two innings of action, taking a 3-0 lead. Leo brought Craig home in the first, taking advantage of an Owl error, while Deandra Leo stroked a home run in the second to bring two more runs across the plate.
The home run parade kept rolling for Adelphi in the fifth, when Craig hit a solo bomb to right center, pushing the Panther lead to 4-0. That was more then enough support for Paige Rhodes threw five innings of four hit, no run softball, striking out two to pick up her first win of the season. Katie Andrews gave two innings of scoreless support, setting down six batters with strike outs to collect her first collegiate save.
Offensively the damage was done by Craig, who was 2-3 with two runs and an RBI and Deandra Leo who was 1-3 with two RBI and a run. Amanda Krier was also hot at the plate, going 2-3, while Rhodes was 1-2 with a run.
Adelphi returns to action on Tuesday, April 5 when they play host to Georgian Court at 3:00 pm in Garden City.
