Softball Bounces Bloomfield, 10-2 and 13-1

Game One/Game Two

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team played host to Bloomfield College on Tuesday, April 26 in non-conference action. The Panthers out scored Bloomfield, 23-3 over two games, collecting victories of 10-2 and 13-1. With the sweep Adelphi improves to 22-20 overall and runs their current win streak to six games.

Game One
The Panthers struck first in game one, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first. Emily Dorko scored Adelphi's first run when she stole home as part of a double steal with Amanda Krier. Jeanine Leo drove in run number two with a single, while Maria Canino smacked a two run double that brought Jeanine Leo and Deandra Leo across the plate.

Canino added another RBI to her already strong day at the plate in the bottom of the third when she drove home Jeanine Leo to give Adelphi a 5-0 lead. The Panthers went ahead, 8-0 in the bottom of the fourth. Krier brought the first run home on a sacrifice bunt that scored Heather Salerno and the final two runs of the inning jogged home thanks to a Deandra Leo home run.

Bloomfield showed some life in the top of the fifth, scoring two runs on back-to-back doubles, but Adelphi would not be denied, as a Salerno double scored the Panthers ninth run and a Craig double plated Salerno, ending the game in the fifth at 10-2.

Leighann Bell collected the win, pitching four scoreless innings and striking out three, while Canino was 2-3 with three RBI at the plate and Jeanine Leo was 3-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Salerno was 2-4 with two runs scored and an RBI at the plate, while Deandra Leo was 1-2 with two runs scored and two RBI.

Game Two
The Panthers jumped on the Deacons early again in game two, scoring five runs on five hits in the first inning. Adelphi's first three runs came on a Shay Craig bunt and back-to-back singles from Jeanine Leo and Deandra Leo and got their fourth and fifth runs courtesy of a Katie Andrews double, taking a 5-0 lead into the second.

Bloomfield got one run back in the top of the second, but after a scoreless bottom of the second and top of the third, the Panthers erupted for five runs in the bottom of the third to take a 10-1 advantage. Two of the runs came off the bat of Salerno, who stroked a double that scored Dorko and Paige Rhodes.

Adelphi tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth, two off the bat of Andrews, who tripled, scoring a Shannon Maloney and Jeanine Leo and the third thanks to a Salerno sacrifice fly.

Andrews earned the win, throwing four innings and striking out eight while giving up just three hits and one run and was just as effective at the plate, going 2-4 with four RBI. Natalie Camarda tossed one inning of no hit, no run relief.

Salerno was 1-3 with three RBI and a run scored, while Jeanine Leo was 3-3 with two RBI and two runs and Craig was 2-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

Adelphi returns to action on Wendesday, April 27 when they travel to Waltham, Massachusetts to take on Bentley University at 3:00 pm.
