Adelphi vs. UWP/Adelphi vs. Caldwell
Kissimmee, FL - The Adelphi University softball team continued play in Kissimmee, Florida at the 2011 Rebel Games on Wednesday, March 16 against University of Wisconsin-Parkside (UWP) and Caldwell. The Panthers toppled UWP, 6-4 in game one and led Caldwell, 2-0 before falling 4-2. With the split Adelphi is now 4-6 overall.
Adelphi vs. Wisconsin-Parkside
Adelphi got off to a quick start against UWP, taking advantage of three singles, two walks and an error to put three runs on the board in the top of the first. Amy Ogden, Heather Salerno and Shay Craig each crossed the plate, driven in by Paige Rhodes, Amanda Dolan and Craig, giving the Panthers a 3-0 edge.
The Rangers answered back in the bottom of the inning with two runs of their own on back-to-back singles, pulling within one, 3-2 after one. Adelphi tacked on another run in the top of the second as Emily Dorko singled, was moved to third on a single by Ogden and then crossed home plate on an error by the UWP catcher, pushing the lead to, 4-2.
UWP knotted the game in the bottom of the second, taking advantage of three hits before Natalie Camarda took the mound, shutting down the Rangers over the next five innings, giving up just six hits, no runs and striking out three. The Panthers would add runs in each of the next two innings courtesy of passed ball in the third and a Rhodes single in the sixth that brought home Craig, securing a 6-4 win for Adelphi.
Marisa Romeo started the game, pitching 1.1 innings, while Camarda finished the outing, earning the win. Craig was 3-3 with two runs and an RBI, while Rhodes was 2-3 with two RBI.
Adelphi vs. Caldwell
The Panthers jumped on Caldwell early, scoring a run in the first and the third innings to take a 2-0 lead after three innings. Ogden scored in the first, leading off the inning with a single and then crossing home plate thanks to a Deandra Leo single. Ogden scored again in the third when Craig laid down a bunt that allowed Ogden to scamper across home plate.
Caldwell answered back in the fourth with a two out rally, taking advantage of two walks with a two run double, knotting the action at two. In the top of the fifth the Cougars used another two out rally to score two more runs, this time on a triple that brought home a runner to make the score 3-2 and then taking a two run lead after an illegal pitch sent another run across the plate, 4-2.
Leighann Bell entered the game in the fifth and stopped the Cougars, striking out three in the loss. Katie Andrews took the loss, throwing 4.1 innings, allowing four runs and striking out four.
Offensively, Adelphi was led by Ogden, who was 1-3 with two runs, while Craig was 2-3 with an RBI.
Adelphi closes out play at the Rebel Games on Thursday, March 17 when they take on Augustana and Wayne State in Kissimmee, Florida.
