Game One/Game Two/
Kissimmee, FL -
The Adelphi University softball team opened the 2011 season on Friday, March 11 in Kissimmee, Florida at the Rebel Games. The Panthers opened the day with a 3-0 win over Holy Family and dropped the second game by an identical score to St. Cloud State. With the split Adelphi closed out day one with a 1-1 record.
Adelphi vs. Holy Family
The first four innings of the contest were scoreless, despite the Panthers putting six of their ten hits on the board and Holy Family scattering four hits of their own. Adelphi finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth during a rally started by Deandra Leo.
Leo sent a ball into left field, where it was misplayed by the Tigers, allowing Leo to reach first base. Leo then took second base on a passed ball, before venturing to third on an Amanda Krier single. Both Krier and Leo were driven home by an Amanda Dolan blast to left field, giving Adelphi a 3-0 lead.
That was more then enough for Leighann Bell, whoth tossed a complete game shut out, scattering five hits, striking out six and walking just two to collect her first win of her senior season. Leo, Amy Ogden and Heather Salerno all picked up two hits in the game.
Adelphi vs. St. Cloud State
The Panthers managed at least one hit in four of the first five innings, but could not get on the board. Adelphi's best opportunity came in first inning when Ogden led off the game with a double and moved to third on a Salerno bunt, giving Adelphi runners on first and third.
Krier worked a walk, loading the bases with one out, but were unable to get a run across the plate. St. Cloud State earned the win, on the strength of a three run fourth inning, courtesy of three hits.
Marisa Romeo was credited with the loss, after tossing 3.2 innings, giving up four hits and just one earned run. Katie Andrews came on and threw 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, walking one and striking out three.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, March 12 when they take on Ashland at 9am and follow that up with Indiana (PA) at 11:00 am.
