Garden City, N.Y. - On the night of December 8, 2011, the Adelphi Athletics Department hosted their second annual “I Care Program” held in the Campell Lounge at the Center for Recreation and Sports. Over 95 student-athletes were in attendance for the event which was sponsored by Pepsi and hosted by the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC).

“The I Care Program began at the start of this school year and came about due to a general trend of poor decision making among students on campus, which we felt presented us with an opportunity to teach our athletes about their actions, consequences and caring,” said Assistant Vice President/Director of Athletics, Robert Hartwell. “I wanted to enforce the fact that you should care about the reputation of this University, the campus, the team, your coach, academics, your parents, and most of all, yourself!”

Peter Fishbein, a lawyer from Bee Ready Fishbein Hatter & Donovan, LLP was the speaker on hand and talked about the impact of issues such as sexual harassment, drunk driving, drug usage and social networking. Last year, Ray Negron, Community Relations Advisor for the New York Yankees was the guest speaker.

“Peter delivered a great message about understanding that there are consequences for your actions,” stated Dom Scala, head baseball coach and Director of Athletic Department Development. “There are dozens of paths you can choose in your life. We want our student-athletes to realize that going down the wrong path can hurt you and others around you.”

The message conveyed to the student-athletes was accepted in a positive manor. Thanks go to Adelphi's SAAC Board who helped make the event possible. Pepsi provided refreshments for all in attendance.
