Manchester, NH - Earlier this afternoon, the women's soccer team took on the Hawks of St. Anselm in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. The Hawks jumped out very early on, but Adelphi hung tough and scored back-to-back goals late in the second to secure a 2-1 victory. With the win, the Panthers are now 8-6, 7-6 NE-10 while St. Anslem slips to 3-10-2, 3-8-2 NE-10.
The Hawk's Kaitlin Oldfield's goal was scored only 4:45 into the contest. Teresa Vercollone crossed the ball in front of the net where Siobhan Flaherty Flaherty headed the ball over to Oldfield who knocked the ball into the goal for the first strike of the game, putting her team up 1-0.
Adelphi had many opportunties on goal, but all it took was the 76th minute to put away their counterparts. At 75:14, senior
Kim Volinski sent a cross to
Emily Masiello where she had a wide open look at the net, and capitalized on the opportunity, putting the ball past keeper Gabriella Primera for the equalizer and her team leading fourth goal of the year.
Just 45 seconds later,
Donna Liotine notched the game winning goal on a similar play. With the assistance of Volinski yet again, Liotine's goal, her third of the season, was just enough to secure the win as the remaining 16 minutes faded in favor of the Panthers.
Panther keeper
Sam Whitney made four saves on the day while her counterpart made eight. Adelphi outshot St. Anselm 15-8 and had a 4-2 advantage on corners.
The women's soccer team returns to action on Wednesday, October 26 when they host the Chargers of New Haven in a NE-10 matchup and their last homestand of the 2011 regular season. The game is scheduled for a 4pm start.
