Garden City, N.Y. – The men's soccer team took on the Bison of Bucknell University earlier tonight in a non-conference meeting. Bucknell had no response to an Adelphi goal in the 70
th minute, resulting in a 1-0 win in front of the home crowd. With the win, the Panthers advance to 6-6-1, 3-0 ASC while the Bison slip to 7-6-1.
It was a back and forth affair in the opening act with both teams playing relatively even on the field and on paper; Adelphi having a 1-0 corner advantage while matching three Bucknell shots with an equal amount of their own.
The Bison's offense came out in the remaining half with fire, pressuring the Panther defense and keeping Chris Herrera busy between the pipes as they rattled off eight shots. On the other hand, Adelphi kept their composure and stuck to their game plan, taking just three shots, but having success on one of them.
Greg Mallia shook things up in the 70
th minute with a blast from 25 yards out, nailing the top right shelf and putting the Panthers up 1-0. In despair, the Bison pressed hard on offense, quickly pushing the ball up field and looking for the equalizer, but defenders
Adam Weinzimer, Steven Rivera,
Dan Larenius and
Travis Tennie held strong while Herrera came up big with three huge saves to keep them grounded.
Adelphi had shots from five different players including two by
Brandon Stoneham who had two good looks at the net while the Bison had a duo producing three attempts each.
The Panthers return to action on Friday night when they take on the Tigers of Clemson University. The game is slated for a 5pm.
