Garden City, N.Y. – In front of a Family Weekend crowd, the men's soccer team hosted the Bison of Howard University in an Atlantic Soccer Conference contest. Adelphi scored in each half while holding Howard scoreless throughout the game. With the win, the Panthers move to 5-6-1, 3-0 ASC while the Bison slip to 2-12-2, 1-2 ASC.
In the 16th minute, the Panthers took advantage of a Bison defense miscommunication when Brandon Stoneham drew both defenders toward him and sent a pass to a wide open Steve Rivera who found himself one on one with keeper Eric Hamilton. Rivera sent a kick low to the ground that found the inside right post and into the back of the net for the first goal of the game, putting the Panthers up 1-0.
Adelphi held the Bison to just two shots in the first half while they rattled off four, and also had a 1-0 corner advantage.
Three ticks past the 53 minute mark, the duo of Stoneham and Omar Edwards set Howard back yet another goal on a smooth give and go. Stoneham entered deep into Bison territory and at the last second, passed it over to Edwards who nailed the top right shelf, giving his team the 2-0 lead.
Howard struggled to get going on offense and combine with stellar Panther defensive efforts, were held to just two shots on goal in the second half and were unable to climb out of the two goal deficit.
The Panthers return to action on Tuesday, October 18 when they host the Bison of Bucknell University in a non-conference meeting. First kick is slated for a 7 pm start.
