Panthers fall victim to Lowell's second half surge

Box Score

Lowell, Mass. - The Adelphi University field hockey team felt the wrath of a four-goal second half surge by fourth-ranked UMass Lowell, falling 4-0 at Cushing Field on Wednesday evening. The Panthers played the defending national champs to a scoreless first half, but the River Hawks assembled an offensive outburst that spelled the ninth loss in ten games for Adelphi. The Panthers fall to 5-10 and 2-5 in Northeast-10 Conference play with the loss, while Lowell moves to 13-2 and a flawless 8-0 in NE-10 competition.

A tightly contested first half saw just 11 shots total between the two teams, but Lowell wasted no time changing the tempo of the game entering the second half and used a goal by Abby Auld four minutes after play resumed to take a 1-0 lead. Later in the half, Rachel McCarthy and Ali Ferraro scored within a minute of each other to make it 3-0, and a converted penalty stroke by Cori Trask in the final minutes sealed the 4-0 defeat for the Panthers.

Seniors Jeanette Heimerle and Crystal Gray registered the team's only shots on goal for the night, while senior goalie Lucia Vigliotti made 10 saves. River Hawks goalie Melanie Hopkins registered two saves in the shutout effort.

The Panthers play their final home game of the regular season on Saturday when Adelphi will honor its nine seniors as part of Family Weekend. Adelphi is slated to take on Stonehill College at 6 p.m.
