College Park, MD – The Panthers will face the Terapins of the University of Maryland tomorrow night at Ludwig field in College Park, Maryland. Adelphi (4-5-1, 2-0 ASC) is coming off of a 2-1 win over Atlantic Soccer Conference foe, Longwood University while #3 UMD (11-1-1, 3-1 ACC) suffered their first loss of the 2011 campaign, falling 2-1 to Virginia over the weekend.
The Panther Attack
Adelphi has nine different players who have scored on the year making them versatile on the offensive end and giving them a variety of scoring options.
Brandon Stoneham,
Mauricio Mora and
James Diana all have two goals to their name while six others have one. Defensively, the Panthers have a strong, experienced backfield consisting of
Dan Larenius,
Steve Rivera,
Adam Weinzimer and Mora, all of whom will aid rookie keeper,
Christopher Herrera, in keeping UMD in check.
Despite being outscored on the season, the Panthers proved they can hang tough against traditionally strong programs and make the necessary big time plays. On September 24, they headed up to Vestal, New York and outplayed the Bearcats of Binghamton, 2-1 in front of a homecoming crowd of over 2,000 onlookers. Just three days later, they played a very physical Rutgers team to a 3-3 tie after falling behind early by two goals.
Terapin Report
Maryland is led by NSCAA National Player of the Week, senior Casey Townsend who has amassed 12 goals in 13 games while teammate John Stertzer is another weapon in UMD's scoring arsenal, collecting nine goals to date, four of which were game winners. The Terps support a slew of talent on the offensive end as shown by outscoring opponents, 32-10 and outshooting them 230-108. Not to be outdone, their defense is also a strong presence on the field, sporting six shutouts, five of which come courtesy of keeper Will Swaim, who boasts an 11-1 record in net.
