Mike Gavagan, who has spent the last 15 years at Adelphi University, joined the department in 2001 and was promoted to Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine in January of 2015.Â
After joining the Athletic Training Staff in 2001 as a graduate assistant, Gavagan was elevated to Assistant Athletic Trainer in January of 2003 and started assisting with the management of the athletic training room and working with student athletes on injury prevention and rehabilitation.
In August of 2003, he was promoted again to the position of Head Athletic Trainer and took on the additional responsibilities of overseeing the entire athletic training staff, purchasing, budgeting and organizing insurance claims, physical clinics, doctoral care and drug testing.
A 2001 graduate of Hofstra University, Gavagan earned his bachelor's degree in athletic training, and earned a master's in health education from Adelphi in 2003. During that time, Gavagan was also a graduate assistant in the athletic training department with his primary sports being volleyball, men and women's basketball and baseball.
Gavagan is also a Clinical Instructor at Adelphi, supervising and mentoring athletic training students from Hofstra University. He has also been an adjunct member of the Adelphi University faculty since the fall of 2003, teaching courses in both basic and advanced athletic training techniques.
Gavagan currently handles all training responsibilities for the men's soccer team as well as the women's lacrosse team, and is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association.Â
