Jamie Apicella was named the head coach of the Adelphi University softball program effective August 24, 2026.
Apicella arrives in Garden City with more than 20 years of coaching experience and an extensive track record of success at the collegiate, high school and travel softball levels.
Prior to Adelphi, Apicella served as the Director of Softball Operations for Beast Softball NY. He also most recently served as the varsity head coach at Mount Sinai High School, where he led the program to two league championships and was twice named Coach of the Year.
Apicella previously returned to the collegiate ranks as an assistant coach at Stony Brook University, assisting in player development, game preparation, practice planning and team defense.
Before his time at Stony Brook, Apicella spent 21 seasons as the head coach at LIU Post from 1999-2019, establishing himself as one of the most successful coaches in Division II softball.
During his tenure, Apicella compiled 826 career victories and a .709 winning percentage, becoming the winningest coach in any LIU sport since 1926. Under his leadership, LIU Post made five appearances in the Division II College World Series, reached 19 NCAA East Regionals and captured nine East Coast Conference championships.
Apicella was named the ECC Coach of the Year five times and coached seven All-Americans during his tenure with the program.
In addition to his coaching responsibilities at LIU Post, Apicella served as the Associate Director of Athletics for Facilities. In the role, he oversaw and supervised 12 acres of outdoor athletic fields and served as the project manager for athletics capital and construction projects.
His administrative responsibilities also included managing regulations, coordinating department events, implementing online scheduling software and overseeing campus vehicle safety.
Apicella remains involved with the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, and previously served as a member of the advisory committee and as a National Top 25 Northeast Regional Representative during his time at LIU post. He also serves as a Division II East Region representative for NCAA softball.
Before beginning his coaching career, Apicella played professional baseball in the San Francisco Giants organization. He was selected by the Giants as an outfielder in the 1994 Amateur Baseball Draft and spent two seasons in the organization's minor league system with the Class A Everett Giants.
