James Sweeney

James Sweeney, the second head coach in the history of the Adelphi women's golf program, enters his fourth year in 2020-21.

With Sweeney at the helm, the Panthers earned the NE10 Team Academic Excellence Award in 2018-19, after posting the highest grade-point average of any women's golf program in the conference, and have continually been recognized on the NE10 and ECAC Academic Honor Roll for their work in the classroom.

In 2018-19, Sydney White became the first Panther, under Sweeney's watch, to be named to the NE10 All-Conference Team. She also garnered NE10 Academic All-Conference accolades that season.

"We are thrilled to welcome James to the Adelphi Panther family," McCabe said. "His passion for golf and knowledge of the game will be a big asset to our student-athletes. I look forward to seeing the team's progress on the course and in the classroom under his leadership."

Sweeney has a background in finance after an extensive career spanning over 20 years working on Wall Street. He spent 20 years as a member of the New York Stock Exchange, before turning his attention to his family and golf.

He graduated in 1992 with a bachelor of arts degree in Political Science from Canisius College.

The Garden City, N.Y. native was elected to the Board of Directors at Hempstead Golf and Country Club, playing a vital role in overseeing golf operations and transforming it into the preeminent place for family golf on the South Shore.

"I am passionate about coaching and about the game of golf, so this was the perfect opportunity for me," commented Sweeney. "Not only am I excited to join a nationally-acclaimed university, but also an athletic department that has a culture of winning. This position presents a chance to help build a program still in its infancy and lay the foundation brick-by-brick."

When he is not coaching golf, Sweeney is actively involved in local youth sports, having coached baseball and basketball at many different levels. He currently resides in Garden City with his wife, Kathleen, and four children.
