Ed Canner begins his fourth year as the head coach of the men and women's tennis team after a long history in the Long Island tennis community.
In 2010-11, Canner led the Panthers to a 10-10 overall record and an 8-2 mark in the Northeast-10. He guided the Panthers to the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament and finished the regular season on a seven-match winning streak. Canner also placed two players on the NE-10 All-Conference teams.
In the squad's first season in the Northeast-10 Conference, Canner guided the Panthers to a 7-4 mark during league play. The Panthers made it to the conference semifinals before falling to first-seeded Bentley, 5-0. Canner once again led the Panthers to the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive season. The Brown and Gold came up short against top-seeded Concordia, 5-0, and finished the season 9-8.
In his second year of guidance, Canner led the Panthers to their second NCAA Tournament appearance in as many years; a feat that has never been accomplished in the program's near 70-year existence. The Brown and Gold suffered the same fate as the previous appearance, falling to Merrimack in the first round, 5-4. Despite their tournament woes, the Racketmen finished the season 9-7, 2-3 in the ECC and held a rank of fourth in the East Region.
In his first year at the helm of the Panthers, Canner helped lead the men's squad to a 13-9 record and their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2003, their second overall in 65 plus years as a program. The women's squad also saw success under the direction of Canner, posting a 5-2 East Coast Conference (ECC) record and coaching Alda Ribeiro to an ECC Rookie of the Year title.
A 1974 graduate of Adelphi University, Canner earned his Master's from Adelphi in 1986. He also obtained a Master's degree from LIU-C.W. Post in 1981 and has spent the last 30 years teaching physical education in Long Beach, New York.
Canner has also managed and instructed at the James J. McCabe tennis facility in Long Beach for the past ten years and prior to that was an instructor at the John A. Anderson Tennis Facility in Rockville Centre, New York.
Canner is currently an adjunct professor in the Physical Education Department at Adelphi University.
