Biography

Robert E. Hartwell, an energetic leader with innovative ideas, is in his 23rd year as the Director of Athletics at Adelphi University. In 2009, he was promoted to Assistant Vice Presient. Under his guidance, he has led Adelphi to nine NCAA Division II Championships and countless NCAA appearances. In addition Adelphi has won the East Coast Conference (formerly the NYCAC) Commissioner[apos]s Cup, awarded to the most outstanding overall athletic program, in seven of the 14 years of its existence including most recently in 2007-08. In 2009, the guided the Athletic Department[apos]s transition into the Northeast-10 Conference, the largest and one of the most successful Division II conferences in the country. Hartwell has shown expertise in the areas of development, long-term planning, budgeting, management, problem solving, marketing and NCAA compliance and enforcement since coming to Adelphi. Hartwell was honored by Adelphi with induction into the Athletic Hall of Fame in April 2005. In 2002, Hartwell was named the Northeast Region AD of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Athletic Directors (NACDA). In 1993, he instituted the Panther Club, a support group that enhances the athletics program with their financial contributions, and the Annual Golf Classic, a fall fundraising and social event in 1989. He re-established the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in 1991 with such former athletics[apos] alumni as Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis and Olympic track stars Bob Beamon and Mel Pender being enshrined. The Department of Athletics added women[apos]s lacrosse and women[apos]s volleyball as varsity sports in the 1990s. Hartwell was promoted to Associate Dean/Director of Athletics, Recreation and Intramurals in 1997. He has since worked closely with the Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs in planning action items that will assist in meeting the student and University[apos]s needs and has been deeply involved in many University decisions. Hartwell, a Glastonbury, Conn. native, graduated from the University of Connecticut at Storrs with a Bachelor of Science from the School of Education in 1963 and with a Master of Arts from the School of Physical Education in 1965. He was a three-year letterwinner on the soccer team, a co-captain from 1962-63. Hartwell became a physical education teacher at Rockville (Conn.) High School upon graduation in 1965. He lives in Valley Stream, New York, with his wife, Raphaele.
