Garden City, N.Y. - Adelphi's season opener and the debut of head coach Margaret Maclean were spoiled on Thursday afternoon, as nationally ranked Kutztown defeated the Panthers, 7-1.


Series History:

• Adelphi falls to 1-6 all-time against the Golden Bears in seven matchups dating back to 2008. The last meeting between the two programs was a 2-1 loss for the Panthers on Sept, 14, 2022.

Highlights:

• Lana Mignon De Wet scored the lone goal for Adelphi while tallying a team-high four shots.
• Sydney Flores registered two shots, both of which were on goal for the Cats.
• Marta Alvarez Auguet registered a defensive save in the match.
• Tayla Szmak got the start and made seven saves for Adelphi in over 33 minutes of action.
• Allison Gregory entered in the second half and made six saves in 26 minutes of action.

How It Happened:

• Both teams generated opportunities during the first quarter, with the opposition drawing a penalty corner in the third minute of the game. Six minutes later, Adelphi registered its first penalty corner with neither team scoring.
• After another corner by the Cats just past the nine-minute mark, De Wet fired a shot that was blocked by a Kutztown defender.
• Less than a minute later, following a penalty corner just past the 10th minute, the Golden Bears found the back of the cage for the game's first goal and the only score of the opening quarter.
• Kutztown added two more tallies within the first three minutes of the second quarter, extending its lead to three.
• With under eight minutes remaining in the second quarter, the Panthers drew three straight penalty corners but were unable to capitalize. The Kutztown goalkeeper made a save, while a Golden Bears defender added a defensive save to deny opportunities from De Wet and Flores and keep Adelphi scoreless.
• With under four minutes remaining in the half, the visitors extended their lead to five, carrying the five-goal advantage into halftime.
• Out of the break, the Adelphi offense drew a penalty stroke, setting up De Wet for her first goal and the team's first tally of the campaign.
• In the final quarter, Kutztown continued to build its lead, getting past Gregory twice with under 10 minutes remaining in the game.
