De Wet's Hat Trick Powers Field Hockey Past STAC, 9-0

Garden City, N.Y. - Behind a hat trick from senior Lana Mignon De Wet and four goals in the opening quarter, the Adelphi University field hockey team rolled past St. Thomas Aquinas College, 9-0, Tuesday afternoon at Motamed Field.

The Panthers (4-4) controlled the contest from start to finish, firing 49 shots and allowing just one on the other end. Seven of Adelphi's nine goals came in the opening half, as the Brown and Gold extended their winning streak to four games.

Series History:

  • Adelphi improves to 9-2 all-time against St. Thomas Aquinas with Tuesday's victory.
  • The Panthers have now won three straight meetings against the Spartans, and six of seven all-time meetings against STAC at Motamed Field.
  • Tuesday's nine-goal margin is the largest for Adelphi in the all-time series.
  • The Panthers have outscored STAC 13-0 across the last two meetings after earning a 4-0 victory in Sparkill last season.

Highlights:

  • De Wet recorded her first hat trick of the season, scoring three times and adding an assist for a game-high seven points.
  • Sydney Flores and Jena Geels each scored twice, while Caroline Beakes and Julia Smith added one goal apiece.
  • Izzy Leclair dished out a team-high two assists, while Emily Souke and Jody Van Aardt each added one.
  • Adelphi held a commanding 49-1 advantage in shots and put 33 attempts on goal, with a12-2 advantage in penalty corners.
  • The Panther defense did not allow a shot through the first three quarters and surrendered just one shot on goal for the entire contest.
  • Tayla Szmak and Allison Gregory split time in the cage, combining for Adelphi's second shutout of the season.

How it Happened:

  • Adelphi wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Just 49 seconds into the game, Souke found Flores, who buried her third goal of the season to give the Panthers an early 1-0 advantage.
  • Flores struck again less than seven minutes later. This time, Leclair set up the junior for her second tally of the afternoon and fourth of the season.
  • De Wet joined the scoring at the 9:59 mark, finding the back of the cage for her ninth goal of the year and extending the lead to three.
  • Less than two minutes later, Beakes capped off a four-goal opening quarter with her first score of the season, sending Adelphi into the second period ahead 4-0.
  • The Panthers continued to pour it on in the second frame, as De Wet connected with Smith just over four minutes into the period for the sophomore's third goal of the season.
  • Geels then struck twice in the second quarter. The junior scored her first with just over seven minutes remaining in the half before Leclair picked up her second assist of the afternoon on Geels' second tally less than five minutes later.
  • Adelphi entered halftime holding a commanding 7-0 advantage after outshooting the Spartans 33-0 over the opening 30 minutes.
  • After a scoreless stretch to begin the third, De Wet took over once again. The senior scored unassisted late in the quarter before completing the hat trick just 2:29 later off a feed from Van Aardt.
  • The Panthers carried the 9-0 advantage through the final quarter, while Gregory turned aside STAC's lone shot on goal to preserve the clean sheet.

Head Coach Margaret Maclean and the Panthers will look to extend their four-game winning streak when they return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 30, traveling to Mitchel Field to take on Molloy University. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
