Baseball Falls in Opening Game of Championship Weekend to SNHU

Garden City, N.Y. – The Adelphi baseball team made its return to NE10 Championship weekend on Thursday afternoon, taking on host and No. 1 seed Southern New Hampshire.

Series History:

  • Adelphi (25-22, 20-16 NE10) is now 11-21 against Southern New Hampshire since April 2010. The last meeting between the pair was a four-game weekend set on April 17-18 that saw the Penmen take three out of four.

Highlights:

  • Giancarlo Rengifo went 2-for-3 as one of Adelphi's six hits, driving in a run on a sacrifice fly.
  • Erick Duignan picked up an RBI on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch in the top of the fourth.

How It Happened:

  • Southern New Hampshire jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first inning after a pair of walks, two singles and two doubles.
  • The Panther bats were silenced by Jake Lapham, while the Penmen added two more runs to their lead in the second and third innings.
  • Adelphi got a run back after Duignan's RBI hit-by-pitch in the fourth, but the Panthers could not capitalize further with the bases loaded.
  • A run in the bottom of the inning and seven Penmen crossing the plate in the fifth after three home runs extended the top seed's lead to 14.
  • Rengifo drove in Albert Ramos in the top of the eighth, but that was all Adelphi could muster as it fell in the opening game of championship weekend, 15-2.

Up Next:

  • Head coach Mike Gaffney and the Adelphi baseball team will play in an elimination game tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. The Panthers will take on the loser of No. 2 Bentley and No. 6 Pace.
