Moore, Plue Lead Softball Past Bridgeport in NCAA Regional Opener

Garden City, N.Y. – The Adelphi University softball team defeated Bridgeport University, 3-0, on Thursday afternoon in the opening game of the NCAA Division II East Regional behind standout performances from Maddy Moore and Jenna Plue.

Series History:

  • Before today, Adelphi held the season series lead, 2-0.
  • Prior to Thursday's game, the programs had faced off 16 times dating back to the 2002 season. Adelphi (36-21, 27-9 NE10) improved to 17-0 all-time against the Purple Knights (33-19, 13-5 ECC).
Highlights:
  • Moore went 2-for-3, driving in two runs while scoring once.
  • Plue tossed a complete-game shutout to earn her 20th win of the season, striking out nine batters.
  • Ava Hershkovitz recorded a hit and an RBI in the win.
  • Jaylen Wright and Makayla Comer each tallied a hit and scored a run.
How it Happened:
  • Plue worked out of a bases-loaded jam with no outs in the first inning to keep Bridgeport off the board.
  • In the bottom half of the second, Adelphi opened up the scoring. Following a single by Moore and a sacrifice bunt from Faith Wagner, Hershkovitz lined an RBI single up the middle to give the Panthers an early lead.
  • Plue again bore down in the fifth inning, working around a walk and a defensive error to keep the Purple Knights scoreless.
  • The Panthers added insurance in the bottom of the fifth. Wright led off the inning with a single before Comer reached on a Bridgeport error. Moore then ripped the first pitch she saw over the right fielder's head, bringing home both runners and extending Adelphi's lead to three.
  • Bridgeport threatened again in the seventh with back-to-back hits, but a beautiful relay from Emma Priest to Tori Parente to Moore cut down a runner at the plate to preserve the shutout. Plue then struck out the next batter looking to secure the victory.
Up Next:
  • Head coach Katie Apostolopoulos and the Panthers return to action on Friday, May 15, and will take on St. Thomas Aquinas at 10:00 a.m.
