Moore’s Clutch Home Run Ignites Softball Past SNHU

Manchester, N.H. – The Adelphi University softball team defeated Southern New Hampshire University in both games of its doubleheader on Friday afternoon. Leading the way was sophomore Maddy Moore, who hit the game-winning home run in the top of the seventh inning to lift the Panthers to victory in game two.

Series History:

  • Prior to Friday's doubleheader, the programs had faced off 28 times dating back to the 2010 season.
  • Adelphi (15-11, 11-1 NE10) was 20-8 all-time against the Penmen (13-9, 6-4 NE10), with the most recent matchup (4/25/25) ending in a 7-2 loss.
Game One: Adelphi 6, Southern New Hampshire 4

Highlights:
  • Moore went 3-for-3 while driving in three runs, highlighted by a two-run home run.
  • Makayla Comer had two hits in four at-bats, including a solo home run in the win.
  • Ellen Tarjan had two hits in four plate appearances.
  • Jenna Plue went the distance, striking out seven and allowing just three earned runs.
How it Happened:
  • The Penmen jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. After Plue opened the game with back-to-back strikeouts, she issued two straight free passes via a hit-by-pitch and a walk. Southern New Hampshire then took advantage of a Panther error to plate the game's first run.
  • Adelphi responded in the top of the second inning, as Moore launched a home run to the deepest part of the park in straightaway center, scoring both herself and Kaitlyn Klepper, who had doubled to lead off the inning.
  • Two batters later, Comer hit a moonshot of her own to extend the lead to 3-1.
  • The Penmen got one back in the bottom half of the inning, stringing together a pair of singles and a walk before scoring on a sacrifice fly.
  • In a back-and-forth contest, the Panthers added two more runs in the third. After Emily Wolfe reached on an error, Tarjan doubled to put runners on second and third with one out. Klepper lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to bring home Wolfe, before Moore followed with an RBI single to score Tarjan.
  • Southern New Hampshire answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the third, as they rallied with two hits and two walks, cutting the lead to one.
  • The Panthers added an insurance run in the top of the sixth. After Moore and Comer both singled, Reeghan McCarthy and Emma Priest drew back-to-back walks, with Priest battling back from an 0-2 count to force in a run.
  • Plue retired three in a row during the seventh to secure the win.
Game Two: Adelphi 5, Southern New Hampshire 4

Highlights:
  • Moore went 2-for-4 with the game-winning home run in the top of the seventh.
  • Faith Wagner collected two hits in four at-bats, including an RBI.
  • Comer had another multi-hit game while scoring a run.
  • Tori Parente went five innings, allowing just one earned run and striking out five.
  • Lily Kenney came out of the bullpen and shut things down, throwing two scoreless innings to earn the win.
How it Happened:
  • The hosts put up a three-spot in the first inning, taking advantage of two Adelphi errors.
  • In the top of the second, Comer ripped a double into right-center field and was brought home by Wagner to cut into the deficit.
  • The Panthers scratched across another run in the third, as Priest led off the inning with a single, advanced to third following some small-ball tactics by Adelphi, and scored on a wild pitch.
  • The Penmen answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning. After a walk and a double, Kaysie DeMoura scored on a wild pitch to push Southern New Hampshire's lead back to 4-2.
  • Adelphi did not let up, stringing together three singles in the fourth to trim the deficit back to one run. McCarthy's line drive into left field allowed Moore to score.
  • Both teams went scoreless until the top of the seventh. In Adelphi's final at-bat, Klepper drew a one-out walk after an eight-pitch battle. Moore wasted no time, blasting the first pitch she saw over the fence in center field. Her second blast of the day could not have come at a better time, giving the Panthers a one-run lead.
  • Kenney worked around a leadoff double in the bottom of the seventh, striking out the final two hitters of the game as Adelphi secured the first two games of the series.
Up Next:
  • The Panthers will continue their series with the Penmen on Saturday, April 4, with first pitch set for 12 p.m.
