Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Walsh (Ohio)

Cary, N.C. – The Adelphi baseball team wrapped up its trip to the Cary Invitational on Sunday morning when it took on Walsh (Ohio) for a doubleheader. Solid pitching from Dylan Beirne, Billy Kind, Colin Richardson and Michael Tufo guided the Panthers to a game-one win, but the Cavaliers got the best of Adelphi in game two.

Series History:

  •  Today featured the first ever meetings between Adelphi (3-4, 0-0 NE10) and Walsh (Ohio).

Game 1: Adelphi 5, Walsh (Ohio) 4 (F/7)

Highlights:

  • Beirne had a nice start for the Brown and Gold, going four innings with no earned runs and four strikeouts.
  • Kind, Richardson and Tufo finished the game for head coach Mike Gaffney, keeping the Walsh bats quiet.
  • Erick Duignan had two RBI in the game while going 2-for-3 with two singles.
  • Johnny Catuosco went 2-for-4 in the three-hole.
  • Adelphi went 4-for-4 stealing bases and five different Panthers scored runs.

How It Happened:

  • The Panthers struck first in the top of the second. Albert Ramos singled to lead off the inning, stole second then crossed home after a Duignan single.
  • Adelphi scored three runs in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. Bryan McCleary and Evan Carway got the party started with two singles before DeMilt and Duignan drove them both in with singles themselves. James Eden drove in the third run of the inning after a sacrifice fly.
  • An Adelphi error in the bottom half led to a two-run home run from Walsh to get the Cavaliers back in the game.
  • The Panthers scored what would be the game-winning run after some chaos on the base paths saw Eden scoring after an error from the Walsh catcher.
  • Another Panther error forced Tufo to navigate through trouble, but he was able to do so, earning his second save in as many days and securing a 5-4 win.

Game 2: Walsh (Ohio) 10, Adelphi 4 (F/7)

Highlights:

  • Justin Wilkinson had his best day at the plate so far this season. The first baseman went 2-for-3 with a double and scored two runs.

  • Down 6-0, Adelphi got two back in the bottom of the second courtesy of a Rigoglisi single.
  • The Walsh lead continued to grow and while Adelphi scored its third run in the fourth, the Cavaliers answered to go up 10-3.
  • Duignan had an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh, but it would not be enough as the Panthers fell, 10-4.
