Rockville Centre, N.Y. — The Adelphi women's soccer team looked to get on the board with their first victory of the season when it took on Molloy Saturday afternoon.
After the offense looked strong on Thursday, the Panthers picked up right where they left off, getting the ball deep into Molloy's defensive end and earning a corner kick in the 15th minute.
Madison Apicella swung the ball in where it found Kara DeBlaiso, who put the ball in the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
The lead did not last long, however, as the Lions responded just 14 minutes later to tie the game up at one. The two Long Island rivals traded shots for the remainder of the period but none were fruitful as the game went into the half tied.
Out of the break, Molloy came storming down the field but their chance was stopped by Emily Aridas. The Cats punched back with a counter attack and this time it was Gia Mandile who scored off of an Apicella assist in the 51st minute.
The next 20 minutes saw both squads with real chances at goal, but the Panthers retained their one goal lead until a lightning strike halted the game with 14 minutes remaining.
Weather forced the teams indoors and it never cleared up as the Panthers would take home a 2-1 victory.
Aridas made three saves and earned her first collegiate victory in net. Kayleigh Goodrich led the team with four shots.
Head coach Brooke DeRosa and the Panthers will return to the field on Tuesday at 4:00 PM for their home opener against Holy Family.
