Field Hockey Dominates in Conference Opener, Tops Franklin Pierce 9-1

Garden City, N.Y. – With a new career-high from Lana Mignon De Wet, the Adelphi University field hockey team opened conference play in dominant fashion defeating Franklin Pierce University 9-1 on Saturday afternoon.

In addition to four tallies, De Wet, added two assists in the victory.

The first quarter saw the home team strike early and set the tone for the game, with three different scorers—De Wet, Kelly Johnson, and Sydney Flores—finding the back of the net. After Johnson broke the scoring open off a pass from Caroline Beakes, De Wet notched her first goal of the afternoon.

With less than a minute remaining in the period, Flores slipped behind the goalkeeper during a scramble in front of the net to extend the home team lead.

De Wet needed just two quarters to complete a hat trick, going on a 2-0 run of her own. She scored her second of the game off a feed from Beakes, then followed it up with an unassisted tally to give the Panthers a five-goal advantage.

Less than a minute later, newcomer Katie Dettore joined the action, netting her second career goal as a Panther. The Ravens threatened late in the half, but Tayla Szmak—who relieved starting goalkeeper Allison Gregory—preserved the shutout through 30 minutes of play.

Coming out of the break, freshman Parris Duenas celebrated her first collegiate goal, with De Wet providing the assist. Franklin Pierce got on the board shortly after, sneaking one past Justina Cavallaro just before the end of the third frame.

In the final period, freshman Cassie Dodenhoff entered the game in goal and kept the Ravens off the board, completing a shutout quarter. Before the final whistle, Beakes scored off a pass from Alexis Huntington. De Wet capped off her standout performance with a fourth goal—this time assisted by Jena Geels—setting a new career high.

Head Coach Jess Mulhern and the Panthers return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 24, continuing conference play with a trip to Pleasantville, N.Y., to face the Pace University Setters at 4 p.m.
