Garden City, N.Y. — The Adelphi men's soccer team opened up its home schedule on Tuesday night when the Panthers played host to Long Island rival Molloy.
It was the home team that set the place early, holding the ball in the Lions' half for a majority of the period.
Gonzalo Gil, Alessio Consoli and Ryan Holt all had chances at goal but none could convert. Molloy only had one true scoring chance but it was thwarted by Andrew Watson as the teams went into the half scoreless.
The first fifteen minutes of the second half featured both teams finding their footing before Adelphi once again went on the attack. In the 60th, 64th and 67th minutes the Panthers had golden opportunities at the icebreaker but could not put the ball in the back of the net.
This continued until the 80th minute when the Brown and Gold had their best chance of the evening. Off of a set piece, Lucas Nicolaou connected on a diving header but the ball just caught the right post and bounced out of bounds.
The offensive push led to a pair of Panther miscues in the 82nd and 85th minutes, giving the Lions premium scoring opportunities. Andrea Farinella reacted accordingly, making two clutch stops to keep the score tied.
In the final seconds, Adelphi was granted a corner kick that pinballed around before a Rory Duggan header was narrowly saved by the Lions' keeper, resulting in a 0-0 final.
The Panthers outshot Molloy 18–4 but were only able to muster three shots on net.
Head coach Gary Book and the Adelphi men's soccer team will return to the pitch on Saturday at 2:00 PM for their conference opener at Saint Anselm College.
