Field Hockey Battles Early, Falls to No. 3 East Stroudsburg on the Road

East Stroudsburg, Pa. – The Adelphi University field hockey team showed early promise but ultimately fell to No. 3 East Stroudsburg University, 10–2, on Sunday afternoon.

The first 15 minutes featured an exciting back-and-forth battle between the two squads, as the Panthers went toe-to-toe with the No. 3 ranked team in Division II, finishing the quarter in a 1-1 tie. Following nearly 12 minutes of scoreless action, Lana Mignon De Wet answered the Warriors' opener with under two minutes remaining in the first quarter, netting her fourth goal of the young season.

East Stroudsburg opened the second quarter with two straight tallies before De Wet responded again. Freshman Jena Geels connected with the junior midfielder for De Wet's second goal of the game. For Geels, a native of the Netherlands, it marked her second assist in three games this season as the young forward continues to find her footing in Adelphi's offense.

Those two goals would be all the Panthers could manage against the Warriors' defense, as the second half featured a shutout by the opposing goalkeeper. On the other side of the ball, the Red and White offense caught fire, scoring eight of their 10 goals across the second and third quarters.

Following the offensive breakout by the hosts, Head Coach Jess Mulhern made the decision to move Allison Gregory into goal five minutes into the second half. The move paid off, as Gregory made two saves and limited the home team to just two goals over nearly 25 minutes of play.

Coach Mulhern and the Panthers will return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 17, when they visit another PSAC opponent, West Chester University. Play is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. EST.
