Uniondale, N.Y. – The Adelphi University field hockey team secured their first win of the season against Molloy University, besting the Lions 6-0 on Wednesday afternoon.

The Panthers jumped out to an early lead as Kelly Johnson broke the ice five minutes into the first quarter with a beautiful finish off a feed from Jena Geels. Ten minutes later, Lana Mignon De Wet connected from deep, firing one into the top right corner of the goal, assisted by Emily Souke.

Both teams tightened up defensively in the second quarter as neither team could find the back of the net. Molloy managed one shot against the Cats' defense, aided by two penalty corners, but nothing threatened starting goalkeeper Tayla Szmak. Adelphi entered halftime with a two-goal lead, dominating in both shots (10–1) and shots on goal (8–0).

Out of the break, the Brown and Gold's offense came out firing yet again. Following four consecutive saves by the Molloy goalkeeper, Alexis Huntington found Johnson in front of the goal for her second score of the day, extending the lead to three. The Lions responded with their first shot on goal, but Szmak was there for the save. Ten minutes later, freshman Izzy Leclair capitalized on a rebound and netted her first career goal, giving Adelphi a 4–0 advantage heading into the final quarter.

The last 15 minutes featured more fireworks, with De Wet joining Johnson as a multi-goal scorer, converting on a penalty corner. Just over two minutes later, newcomer Katie Dettore notched her first goal as a Panther with an impressive backhand shot from deep, putting an exclamation mark on Adelphi's first win of the young season.

Head Coach Jess Mulhern and the Panthers will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 14, when they travel to East Stroudsburg University to take on the Warriors. Game time from East Stroudsburg, Pa., is set for 1:00 p.m.
