Foxborough, Mass. - As
Kyle Lewis fired one home with 2:41 remaining in the extra frame, the Adelphi University men's lacrosse team brought home its ninth national championship with a 9-8 win over University of Tampa Sunday afternoon at Gillette Stadium.
"From the 49 guys that were on the field and the administration that were all over, my true joy is to look around and see so many people happy for all of us," said Head Coach
Gordon Purdie.
Purdie now stands as the third coach in program history to win multiple national championships, joining the likes of his former head coach Paul 'Doc' Doherty and Sandy Kapatos.
Vincent McDermott proved to be the star of the show, tying his career-high in goals with four and added an assist under his belt as well to earn Most Valuable Player honors.
Michael Durnin and
Noah Gibson chipped in their 65th and 66th goals of the season respectively to give Adelphi an early 2-1 edge. These two now hold the top two spots in the Panthers' single-season marks in their Division II era.
Joining the record party was
Braden Donnellan, with his assist on Lewis' first score in the second frame notching his 110th point of the season, breaking Bob Engelke's number (109) that stood for over 45 years.
Dylan Renner was the defensive security the team needed, accumulating 14 saves amidst a plethora of attacks from Tampa.
Neither team was able to secure a heavy advantage, with the Spartans' 7-5 lead in the third quarter serving as the only multi-goal lead all day.
McDermott scored three of his four in the third frame, giving the advantage back to the Brown and Gold with only two seconds left on the clock.
Tampa continued to play carefully over the final frame, netting the game-tying goal with just over six minutes to play.
The game's most dramatic moment came in the closing moments of regulation, where the Spartans had appeared to take the lead in the final 15 seconds. However, head coach J.B. Clarke called a timeout with 12 seconds left, nullifying the potential game-winning goal and sending the game to an extra period.
"All I did was put the ball in the net [in overtime], but that doesn't show what everyone on this program has been doing for the past six months," said Lewis on his first career overtime goal.
Adelphi's repeat is the first Garden City has seen since the 1998 and 1999 seasons.
