Women's Hoops Drops Heartbreaker to Assumption In NE10 Semifinal

Worcester, Mass. - In a nailbiting contest, the Adelphi University women's basketball team lost its Northeast-10 tournament semifinal against sixth seeded Assumption University on the road, by the final score of 54-48.

Isabella Asencio rose for a pull-up jump shot with 7:18 to play, putting the Brown and Gold in front by two. After keeping the hosts to just one basket over the next five, the Blue and White hopped back in the lead with 2:27 left.

Rolanda Robinson tied the battle at 48-all with just over 60 seconds to play. As the hosts went 6-6 from the free throw line throughout the final minute, it was Assumption who emerged victorious at the final buzzer.

Two of the top 20 scoring defenses clashed early, with only five combined points between the Panthers (13th in DII) and Greyhounds (18th in DII) through the first five minutes.

Kaitlyn O'Connell's three-point prowess continued to flourish in the first quarter, knocking down two from behind the line. Lateisha Willis tallied the only other basket for the Brown and Gold in the first set of ten, with Asencio drawing a foul as two ticks remained and capitalized on both opportunities from the stripe.

Holding a two point lead to start the second, the visitors were able to keep the same pace for over half of the frame as a Lauren Beberman layup put the 'Cats up four with 4:23 left in the half. Assumption responded quickly with a 10-0 run capped off by Kajhe Hall converting a layup to put the hosts up six. Robinson's turnaround jumper trimmed that deficit to four before the teams headed to the locker rooms.

Passing the torch from senior to freshman in the second half, Gamila Betton accumulated the first six for the Panthers to put the road team back on top. Molly Stokes hit for the third time from beyond the arc midway through the third, giving Assumption a three point edge.

As the game continued to go back and forth, the Brown and Gold scored nine unanswered points including a pair of buckets from Christina Sanchez and headed to the final frame with a slight advantage.

O'Connell and Asencio combined for 22 points when all was set and done, both tallying four conversions from the field. Beberman starred on the defensive end, leading the team in rebounds (seven), steals (five), and blocks (four) across 38 minutes of action.

Head Coach Sade Jackson and Adelphi will now await their fate in the NCAA Selection Show. Taking place on Sunday, March 9, the show will be streamed live on NCAA.com at 10:30 p.m..
