Garden City, N.Y. — After a doubleheader sweep of Assumption on Saturday night, the Adelphi baseball team returned to field for two against #25 Bentley.
Game 1: Adelphi 5, Bentley 3
The Falcons got on the board early, taking an early 1-0 lead off a solo home run. Bentley struck again in the fourth, taking advantage of a Panther error and scoring two more after a single to go up three.
The deficit seemed to wake up the Adelphi bats as Alex Rende and Joe Pellegrino started the bottom half off with back to back singles. The pair were able to advance on a willd pitch and a bloop fielder's choice from Albert Ramos would bring in the first Panther run. Michael Robinson was able to drive in the second run of the game thanks to a Bentley error.
Dawson Montesa shut down the Falcons in the top of the fifth and the 'Cats were able to capitalize. Two walks and error by the Bentley right fielder set the table for Albert Ramos who tied the game with a walk himself. Jack Wishner then singled to center field, giving Adelphi a 5-3 lead.
Once he got the lead, Montesa was lights out. The sophomore struck out a career-high 17 batters in eight innings, leading the Panthers to their third straight victory.
Zach Rovner earned his fourth save of the season in the ninth.
Game 2: Adelphi 4, Bentley 8
In game two it was the Panthers who got on the board first. After a Wishner single and Matt Ryan hit by pitch in the bottom of the second, Rende cranked his first home run of the season to put Adelphi up 3-0.
Unfortunately for the Brown and Gold, however, that was most of the offense they would get all game. John Carver would work his way in and out of trouble his entire outing, allowing the Falcons to tie the game in the fourth but the sixth inning was when the game got away from the Panthers. With runners on first and second, Bentley hit a three-run home run to take a 6-3 lead. They would score two more in the seventh and although the 'Cats threatened in the bottom of the seventh after a Robinson RBI single, they could not get enough runs across and fell 8-4.
Head coach Bill Ianniciello and the Adelphi baseball team will return to the field on Tuesday when they take a break from conference play and take on Dominican (NY) at 3 p.m.
