Historic Men's Basketball Season Ends in NCAA Division II East Region Quarterfinal

Amherst, N.Y. — Head coach Dave Duke and the #2 seed Adelphi men's basketball team (26-7, 17-3 NE10) continued their historic season on Saturday when they took on #7 seed Dominican (NY) in the NCAA Tournament at Daemen University.

The Panthers got off to a sizzling start, making their first four shot attempts and grabbing an early 10-4 lead. Dominican came back with buckets of their own, shrinking the Adelphi lead to one and the slugfest was on in the first half.

Each bucket made by one team was met with another on the other end of the floor. Leads continued to change until the 5:06 mark when the Chargers were able to go up six. A jumper from Matthew Price and three-pointer from Patrick Burke cut the Dominican lead to one.

Two more buckets from Burke put the Panthers back up and although it felt like momentum was beginning to swing in Adelphi's favor, they could not extend the lead further than one.

Dominican scored on a driving layup to go up once again and lead by three with 12 seconds left. An Al-Fatir Connor free throw with time expiring had the score at 41-39, Chargers, heading into the break.

The second half quickly became all about Dominican as they went on a lightning fast 15-2 run less than five minutes into the second half.

Adelphi fought valiantly, with a Price three cutting the Charger lead to 11 a few minutes later, but the Dominican attack was just too much as they made 12 of their first 16 shot attempts.

The Panthers' season ended in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA East Region, 85-66.

Burke and Dayshaun Walton led the team with 11 points each.

Northeast-10 Defensive Player of the Year Jarnel Rancy finishes his season with 129 blocks, shattering the Adelphi single season record and leading all three division of the NCAA in the category.
