Six Score in No. 10 Women's Lacrosse Win at Roberts Wesleyan

Rochester, N.Y. - For the second consecutive game, Ashley Kolomechuk led the no. 10 Adelphi University women's lacrosse team in points as they took down Roberts Wesleyan in non-league action on Wednesday.

Kolomechuk was one of three players to score four goals as she added a pair of helpers to finish with six points. Defensively, Danielle Becker and Sonny Lionetti accounted for three and two caused turnovers, respectively, while combining for five ground balls.

The game started out all Redhawks (1-5), as they opened the contest with the first four goals. Payson Hedges was the first to score for the Panthers (4-2), sparking a six goal run that spanned the second frame and gave the visitors a two-goal edge. Over that stretch, the hosts were held scoreless and committed six turnovers while Madison Marchetta logged four saves between the pipes.

Roberts Wesleyan got in the final word of the half, scoring with seven seconds on the clock and cutting the Adelphi lead to just one at the break.

Coming out of the half, Alexandra Leggio connected with Hedges to put the Cats on the board in the third, as they stretched their advantage to three with tallies from Rita Sefransky and Marielle Colalillo. Another scoreless stretch, this time for Adelphi allowed the home team to put back three straight and knot the game at nine-all with 3:32 left in the third.

Four straight goals - traded by Hedges and Kolomechuk - put Adelphi in the lead for good, despite several more scores from Roberts Wesleyan. Despite the hosts coming within two, Julia Foppiano got the last goal of the contest with under 30 seconds remaining in regulation to send Adelphi downstate with the win.

Adelphi capitalized on its free-position shots, going 5-for-7 on the 8-meter, while its opponents only took two shots, (landing none) on seven attempts.

The no. 10 team in Division II according to the IWLCA will host its home opener on Saturday, Mar. 15 at 1:00 p.m.. The Cats will play host to no. 13 East Stroudsburg in a rematch of last year's NCAA Semifinal.
