Garden City, N.Y. — Head coach Bill Ianniciello and the Adelphi baseball team returned home to William J. Bonomo Field on Tuesday afternoon for a tilt with Queens College.
After a scoreless top half of the first from Gavin Graff, the 'Cats struck big first on a Joe Pellegrino grand slam.
The Knights got two back in the second inning, but Adelphi took a 5-2 in the bottom of the second after a Johnny Catuosco RBI groundout.
In the bottom of the third immediately after an Alex Rende walk, Jack Tate absolutely crushed the first home run of his collegiate career to put the 'Cats up 7-2.
Although they were down five, Queens did not go away and kept chipping away at the Adelphi lead. They were able to score one in the fourth and then three more in the top of the fifth to get the game to a score of 7-6.
While working with some runners on, freshman Matthew Curto put together his best relief appearance so far, pitching for three innings, allowing no runs and striking out two.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Panthers added a pair of runs thanks to a Bryan McCleary SAC fly and James Eden single to left field.
Up 9-6, Adelphi ran into some trouble on the mound. The Panthers walked six batters in the top of the ninth and give up the lead. Pellegrino homered again to get the 'Cats within one, but the offense could not muster a comeback as Adelphi fell 11-10.
The Brown and Gold will return to the field on Friday at 3 p.m. when they host Pace for their Northeast-10 conference opener.
