Manchester, N.H. — After clinching the Northeast-10 regular season title on Saturday, the Adelphi men's basketball team headed up to New England to take on conference foe Southern New Hampshire.
Early on, both teams showed that it would be a battle throughout. Each basket or defensive stand from the Panthers was met by the same result from the Penmen.
Southern New Hampshire would get into a groove halfway through the first half however as they would take a seven point lead, its biggest of the half. Adelphi felt the pressure, however, and quickly rattled off a 10-0 run thanks to baskets from Al-Fatir Connor, Mason Jackson and Tavin Pierre Philippe to gain a lead its own.
The final four minutes of the half would be a back and forth affair until SNHU once again jumped out in front by six. Jumpers from Andres Fulgencio and Dayshaun Walton in the last six seconds would cut the lead to two as the Panthers went into the break down 40-38.
The early goings of the second half would be very similar to the previous period. Both teams shot the lights out and a lead for either team was never bigger than three halfway through.
SNHU once again jumped out to a six point lead but the 'Cats continued to be resilient. A Jarnel Rancy layup would get the Panthers within two points and then a pair of Pierre Philippe free throws tied the game with two minutes to go. The Penmen would miss a three on their next possession and then a foul put Walton at the line. One of those free throws would be good to give Adelphi their first lead in almost fifteen minutes.
Unfortunately for Adelphi, the one point lead would not stand as the Penmen came down the floor with a clutch layup and then two foul shots to win the game, 75-72.
Pierre Philippe scored a team-high 22 points on 7-11 shooting followed by Walton who scored 15.
Rancy grabbed nine boards and recorded three blocks, moving his total on the season to 106.
Head Coach Dave Duke and the Panthers (24-6, 16-3 NE10) will return to the court on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. to host New Haven for Senior Day and their regular season finale.
