#3 Women's Lacrosse Opens Season with 17-9 Win at Molloy

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - Behind the hat tricks from four different players, the no. 3 Adelphi University women's lacrosse team opened the 2025 campaign with a 17-9 decision at nearby Molloy University on Wednesday.

Returners Ashley Kolomechuk, Rita Sefransky and Marielle Colalillo all recorded three goals each in the first game of the season and were joined by former Adelphi field hockey standout Amanda Lee, who picked up a trio of her own tallies to start her collegiate lacrosse career. Kolomechuk led the charge with her three additional helpers, totaling six points for the game and tying her career-high.

At the draw, first year Rory Meehan put up an impressive mark with 14 draw control wins in her first college outing for the Panthers (1-0).

Just over a minute in, Sefransky kick-started a four-goal run for Adelphi, but the home team broke the silence at 7:42 with their first strike of the 2025 season. By the conclusion of the opening quarter, the visitors doubled the score of the Lions.

An identical score in the second frame put the Panthers up 12-6 - the stretch of six goals for Adelphi included two man-down tallies from Lee and three other goals courtesy of man-up possesions.

A slower third saw the visiting team commit three turnovers which Molloy capitalized on with a perfect 6-for-6 in clear attempts and their shot on goal advantage. Fortunately, Madison Marchetta put up her best frame in net with seven of her new career-best 14 saves in the contest.

Adelphi edged Molloy in the last quarter in scoring, but the margin was too great to overcome for the home team after the first frame.

Head Coach Pat McCabe - entering his 11th season in 2025 - and the squad head south for its annual southern swing as they take on no. 1 University of Tampa in a rematch of the 2024 National Championship game on Feb. 22. A season ago, the Panthers stole a 13-6 in its first matchup, but fell in the final game of the year by a near reverse score at 8-13. The team will also take on Rollins College on Feb. 25 before returning north.
