Field Hockey Defeated By Saint Anselm in Double OT Thriller

Garden City, N.Y. – The Adelphi University field hockey team was defeated by Saint Anselm College on Friday afternoon by a final score of 1-0 in double overtime.

The Panthers' (12-6, 10-2) hard-fought loss featured over five quarters of scoreless hockey by both teams. The Hawks (15-5, 10-2) threatened first during the opening period, testing starting goalkeeper Allison Gregory and the defensive line multiple times in the sixth minute, putting their first shot on goal and drawing a penalty corner.

After the Panthers' defense survived the initial push, they took their first cracks at the opposition's goalkeeper in the ninth minute, as Kelly Johnson and Caroline Beakes each put shots on goal, but neither found the back of the net, wrapping up the first 15 minutes of play.

In the second quarter, the Hawks again challenged Gregory, with reigning conference Defensive Player of the Year Millie Forster firing a shot that was turned away. Six minutes later, Adelphi made another push, drawing a corner as Lana Mignon De Wet's attempt was blocked. Saint Anselm then threatened once more with under three minutes remaining in the half, drawing a corner and putting a shot on goal, but Alexis Huntington preserved the scoreless tie with a defensive save.

Out of the intermission, both teams continued to press for the first goal. Each side created breakaway opportunities, but neither could capitalize during the defensive battle.

In the final quarter of regulation, the Panthers tested the visiting goalkeeper multiple times, as Jena Geels, De Wet, and Beakes each put shots on goal, but Mackenzie Wehrum kept things level. The Hawks then rallied for an intense late push, drawing multiple penalty corners, while Bella DiFiore's attempt was saved by Gregory, sending the game into overtime tied at zero.

The first overtime period saw chances for both sides to win it. Saint Anselm threatened early, firing off seven shots during the third and fourth minutes of extra time, with Gregory making saves on all three attempts that reached her. Following that defensive stand, the Panthers countered with another offensive burst, as Izzy Leclair, Katie Dettore, and De Wet each took shots, but none converted, forcing a second overtime.

In double overtime, the Hawks capitalized on their first opportunity, as a two-on-one breakaway allowed Breanna Shorey to slip one past Gregory — the first goal in over 73 minutes of play — ending the Panthers' conference championship run.

Head coach Jess Mulhern and the Panthers will await their fate during the NCAA Selection Show on Tuesday, Nov. 11.
