Erie, Pa. — Head coach Brooke DeRosa and the No. 24 ranked Adelphi women's soccer team took the ride up to No. 7 Gannon on Wednesday afternoon for a non-conference tilt.
Crystal Knoell sparked the Adelphi offense to a rapid start, hitting the left post with a shot in the second minute and then having another chance at goal in the sixth minute but her attempt was saved by the Golden Knights' keeper.
The Panthers' momentum did not last long unfortunately as Gannon struck for the first goal of the game in minute number 10. Adelphi tried to get back into the game with a Kayleigh Goodrich attempt minutes later but the Golden Knights' attack was too much for the Panther backline. Gannon struck again in the 31st and 37th minutes to gain a three goal margin.
In the 40th minute, the Golden Knights' goalie strayed too far from the net as a loose ball trickled to Dylann Trahey. The senior saw an opportunity at a long goal and took it, firing the ball over the keeper's head and into the back of the net to cut the deficit down to two.
The two nationally ranked teams went into the half with Gannon holding a 3-1 lead. Coming out of the break, the home team was on fire offensively, recording 12 shots in the first 13 minutes before one eventually found the back of the net. Adelphi shuffled its lineup around, but the field was tilted in Gannon's favor as they scored again in the 74th minute and went on to ultimately win 5-1.
Emily Aridas made a career-high 13 saves in the game.
The Panthers will return to the field on Saturday at 4:00 PM for a highly anticipated match at Franklin Pierce.
