Garden City, N.Y. — Head coach Gary Book and the Adelphi men's soccer team returned home on Saturday afternoon for a conference contest against Assumption.
Early on, the Panthers were able to push the pace and keep in ball in the Greyhound zone. Alessio Consoli saw a handful of chances in the opening minutes but could not convert. Adelphi recorded eight shots before Assumption was able to even get one in the 34th minute.
The Greyhounds then responded with three more shots before Adelphi's best chance of the half from Rory Duggan rung off the crossbar to keep the game scoreless. After a handful of substitutions before the break, neither team was able to score as it was 0-0 at half.
Adelphi continued their up tempo pace in the second period, once again recording shots early on. In the 53rd minute Gonzalo Gil tapped a loose ball to Duggan who sprung free down the sideline before sending a perfect pass to Ryan Holt. Holt took one touch before firing a shot around the defender and the Assumption keeper to put the Cats up one.
Less than a minute later, Duggan once again had the ball at his feet and again sped fast the Greyhound defense. This time, he passed the ball to Gil in the middle of the box who beat a defender before scoring Adelphi's second goal of the day.
In the next three minutes, Duggan had a pair of chances at goal himself but both were stopped by the goal keeper. After that, it was Assumption who turned on the pressure. A free kick in the 80th minute somehow found its way through every Panther defender and into the back of the net to cut the deficit down to one.
Tyler Dwyer had a chance to score just seconds later but his shot sailed high. Andrea Farinella made a clutch save in the 83rd minute to keep the Greyhound attack at bay. For the remaining time, the Panthers were able to keep the ball around midfield and ran out the clock for a 2-1 win.
The Adelphi men's soccer team will return to the field on Wednesday at 7 p.m. to host Queens College.
