Garden City, N.Y. - In the first double overtime affair since 2020, the Adelphi University women's basketball team broke its dry spell against Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday afternoon, by a final score of 66-65.
After the Penmen's Samantha Pfeil hit a pair of free throws with 1:08 to trim the deficit to just one, Abby Wager then made a crucial mistake by stepping out of bounds with 27 seconds on the clock. Following two missed free throws from
Isabella Asencio, 24 ticks remained as SNHU inbounded the ball from half court. A strong defensive stand culminating in a missed jumper from the visitors' Meghan Gordon sent the crowd into a frenzy at the buzzer.
In the first overtime,
Kaitlyn O'Connell got the scoring going on the first possession, but the Brown and Gold were unable to get any more fire brewing the rest of the way. Luckily, the defense came to play, with Gordon's layup with just under two minutes to play being the only basket to stand for the Penmen. With 10 seconds to play, Wager's pass was deflected and stolen by
Rolanda Robinson to set up the final possession. Despite a kickout behind the three-point line, Robinson missed her potential game-winner to send the game to an extra overtime.
While the fourth quarter was higher scoring, only three points were scored in the last 2:52, all by the visitors. Gordon going one of two from the stripe as 0:06 showed on the clock saved what would've been a trailing situation to a tie. On the inbound, Robinson missed another shot from beyond the arc to end regulation.
The Panthers came out hot to start the game, winning the first frame 22-11. This was highlighted by an 18-0 run to end the quarter, with O'Connell scoring 11 of the first 13, and capped off by a
Christina Sanchez three pointer.
Stephanie Davis would break the scoreless streak for SNHU, with the road team responding with a 10-0 run of their own to start the second quarter. Even with the 'Cats taking another eight point lead with two minutes to play, the Blue and Gold would back to within one by the halftime break.
Coming out of the break, the Panthers began to find their groove again with a 13-0 run midway through the quarter. O'Connell would once more show off her range, knocking down two more deep shots. The lead would stretch to six before the buzzer, setting up the chaos of the final 20 minutes that the program hasn't seen in five years.
It was exactly five years ago, on Saturday, Jan. 11 of 2020, when the Panthers defeated SNHU in double overtime by the final score of 92-90.
