Field Hockey Loses to Newberry in High-Scoring Affair; 4-3

Newberry, S.C. - In a matinee contest that saw seven combined goals, the Adelphi University field hockey team lost the second leg of its South Carolina trip to Newberry College on Sunday afternoon by a final score of 4-3.

Contrary to Friday's season opener, the scoreboard lit up early after Ali Nagy took a feed from Amanda Lee to put the Panthers on top. It was just over two minutes later however when the Wolves' Emma Westbrook handled a rebound that found its way to the back of the goal near the 11:00 mark.

Tamsin Bangert was the next Newberry player to step up getting a score of her own to give the hosts' the early advantage. The Scarlet and Grey were able to get six shots through the first 15 minutes, but stayed with a one-goal edge heading into the second.

Both defenses began to find their footing in the next set of 15, but the Brown and Gold still found their opportunities coming aplenty. Three penalty corners were accompanied by another six shots, most of which were blocked. Two more corners were given to Newberry in the final 60 seconds of play, but the score stayed still once the halftime buzzer sounded.

It was once again a quick score to start the third frame, this time going back in favor of the Wolves'. Emma Westbrook netted her second of the game off a penalty corner to double the home lead. While it took over 11 minutes to get a corner of their own, Adelphi's Sydney Rossacci controlled the bounce off of Emiline Biggin's stick to trim the deficit back down to one.

After Westbrook inbounded another penalty corner, three shots were fired off that were saved by Tayla Szmak. Unfortunately for the visitors, Newberry's Lieke Vanderkamp was there for a fourth that found a hole through the defense for further insurance.

63 seconds was all it took after the fourth quarter clock winded before the 'Cats Nagy tallied her second of the afternoon to put the crowd on their seats. Lee and Nagy continued exchanging shot attempts as the clock winded down, but none of them could find the target. An action-packed final 17 seconds saw another penalty corner inbound from Nagy, and a quick shot from Biggin get blocked by the Wolves' defense. After a late foul was called on the Brown and Gold, the clock struck zero as Newberry snuck away with the late victory.

Head Coach Jess Mulhern and the Panthers will now return home to Garden City where they'll be taking on West Chester University of Pennsylvania in their home opener on Thursday, September 12. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
