West Haven, Conn. - An up and down season for the No. 3 seed Adelphi University baseball team came to a close Tuesday afternoon, in a 6-0 loss to No. 2 seed University of New Haven in NE10 Championship first-round action at Frank Vieira Field.
The struggles at Frank Vieira Field continue to plague the Panthers, who have now lost six of their last eight games in West Haven.
A couple of lead-off walks to start the game ultimately haunted Adelphi starter
Coleton Reitan, when UNH's Shaun Callahan drove a pitch to right to bring around both New Haven runners in scoring position, giving the hosts a 2-0 lead.
New Haven starter Liam Carroll was efficient from the start, converting 39 pitches into four no-hit innings.
As the tying run came to the the plate in the fifth,
Erick Duignan -- on an 0-2 pitch -- just missed a game-tying three-run homer by a few feet to the left of the foul pole.
Carroll's no-hit bid finally ended in the sixth on what was Adelphi's only hit of the afternoon -- a
Greyson Pizzonia single that whistled through the vacated right side.
Carroll ultimately threw seven innings of one-hit ball, while Reitan was tagged with four runs and five hits in 5.1 innings of work.
The season now comes to a close for Head Coach
Bill Ianniciello's squad, which concludes the 2024 campaign at 23-23 overall.
