Quarterfinal Bound: Women's Lacrosse Bests New Haven in NCAA Opener, 18-6

Pleasantville, N.Y. - After taking a commanding five-goal lead after the opening quarter, Adelphi University women's lacrosse went on to secure an 18-6 victory over New Haven in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Thursday.

Ashley Kolomechuk and Danielle Marino both accounted for five points in the win, as eight different goal scorers found the back of the net. Jillian McFadden made seven quality saves on the other side of the overwhelming performance by the Panther offense.

Adelphi took four shots (and scored once) before New Haven even had a chance at the goal, but a free position shot flew wide for the Chargers. Marino had a hand in the next two goals to push the Panthers out to a 3-0 lead. Alison Turner was responsible for back-to-back strikes that pushed the Chargers into a deeper deficit, but they finally broke the silence at 3:48. Kolomechuk scored under the two minute mark as Marino added another before a late whistle sent New Haven to the eight-meter, which they converted for their second goal of the frame.

With a firm lead, the Panthers continued to press on the gas, added four more, to New Haven's one to hold an 11-3 advantage at the break. Adelphi managed 22 shots in the opening half while keeping the Chargers to single digits while they went on to commit seven turnovers to the Panthers' five.

Coming out of the break, a slew of turnovers and missed shots kept both sides off the board until Marielle Colalillo connected with Kerrin Heuser to make it a nine-goal separation. Kelly-Ann McGrath buried a free position shot over two minutes later to send the game to running time with one quarter left to play.

With a lot of work ahead of them New Haven managed the first tally of the fourth to stop the clock, but a goal from Heuser two minutes later put the pressure on as far as time was concerned. In a matter of six minutes, Adelphi saw goals from three different players including the final strike from Kolomechuk as part of her five-point performance.

The win sends Adelphi back to the NCAA quarterfinal round where they will take on top-ranked  - and no. 1 nationally - Pace University on Saturday, May 18. Game time is set for noon at Northwell Stadium.
