Wilmington, Del. - After making its third-consecutive trip the NCAA Division II East Super Regional, the Adelphi University softball team lost Game 2 against Wilmington University on Wednesday afternoon, ending the 2024 campaign for the Panthers.
The Wildcats have now taken the rubber series of the two schools' three consecutive postseason clashes, now winning the previous two after the Panthers made their College World Series appearance in 2022.
Offense was easy to come by for the hosts, spurting a six-run inning on the Brown and Gold right away. Starter
Lindsey Hibbs was pulled after recording just one out and facing seven batters, in favor of freshman
Tori Parente. The newcomer would go on to pitch the next three frames, allowing another three runs to come home on four hits.
Faith Camilleri's single to right field in the second inning would later prove to be the only hit for the Panthers on the afternoon.
Kaitlyn Klepper would reach on an error in the third and
Courtney Wengryn started off the fifth inning with a walk. Klepper's flyout to left field proved to be the ultimate dagger, leading to the on-field celebration of the Wildcats, this time on their home field.
"I'm very proud of this team and everything we achieved this past year," mentioned Head Coach
Carla Campagna. "For our seniors, making it this far season after season is an accomplishment in itself and we never take it for granted."
"I'm grateful for my assistant coaches, along with our families, alumni, and fans who make this place so special."
"We have these opportunities because of all those that guided the way through Adelphi softball, as we are all connected through this beautiful game, a true family," she concluded.
