Garden City, N.Y. - For the third season in a row, the No. 2 seed Adelphi University softball team is advancing to the NCAA Division II East Super Regional, following its 4-1 victory over No. 6 seed Molloy University on Saturday afternoon.Â
With this win, the Panthers (34-19) have now won their third-consecutive game after last Saturday's NE10 Championship loss. They will await whoever comes out of the East 1 Regional, hosted by Wilmington University.
"It means everything... Every single game I've told my other seniors that I'm playing for them, and it's a really great feeling to be back," remarked senior outfielder
Courtney Wengryn about heading back to Supers.
Unlike the previous two games, the Brown and Gold's bats came ready early. Wengryn's double in the second frame scored
Jaden Farhat to break the ice. In the following inning,
Faith Camilleri's single brought home
Zee Zee Shreter to double the Adelphi lead.Â
The Lions didn't let up that easy though, as a bunt that squeaked past the infield from Steph Conrade was just enough to bring home Chrissie Huhn following her one-out double. Walks became the theme in the top of the fifth, with two drawn by Farhat and Wengryn that doubled the 'Cat lead once more.Â
Senior starter
Lindsey Hibbs was once again ready for the pressure, allowing just one hit in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. The final frame saw her 988th and 989th career strikeout, as she secured her 22nd win on the season. The Ontario native finished with a line of one earned run on five hits along with seven strikeouts.Â
"It's bittersweet, I know it's going to end at some point but we don't want it to end," said Head Coach
Carla Campagna. "[Our seniors] have left such an impact on this program... going three years in a row says something about
them and how hard they work"
When asked about the keys to getting past this point like they did in 2022, Campagna added "We need to make the plays. Coming up big with runners in scoring position, which we were able to do these last two games. If we have the confidence, we should have no problem playing Adelphi softball."
