New Haven Spoils Senior Day Celebration for Baseball, 7-2

Garden City, N.Y. - On a day in which the team celebrated its six graduating seniors, the Adelphi University baseball team was unable to pull off a Senior Day victory on Saturday, falling 7-2 to University of New Haven in an NE10 showdown Saturday at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field.

Between batting practice and fielding drills, Head Coach Bill Ianniciello and the Panthers paid tribute to their graduating class -- which was comprised of Carlos Acosta, Jack Carr, Bobby Molinaro, Joe Pellegrino, Greyson Pizzonia and Alex Rende.

The son of 1998 Adelphi Athletic Hall of Fame inductee Dom Gatti, UNH's Michael Gatti was staked to an early 2-0 lead, on the strength of a two-RBI single by Tyler Budzik.

The 'Cats answered right back though. After Albert Ramos got plunked on the opening pitch of the second, Michael Robinson took Gatti deep to right for a game-tying two-run homer.

UNH got to Adelphi starter Brendan Kenneally again in the third. Departing the mound with his team trailing by a run, Coleton Reitan entered to try and stop the bleeding.

Reitan worked a perfect fourth and a near-flawless fifth, but the wheels fell off for the reigning NE10 and NCBWA East Region Pitcher of the Week in the top of the sixth.

A hit batter and a pair of seven-pitch walks loaded the bases for the Chargers, before Matt McIntire's two-RBI double opened the lead further for the visitors. Two batters later, Shaun Callahan lined a single that skipped off Erick Duignan's glove, scoring two more to make it a 7-2 game.

Kenneally took the loss in the decision, but Reitan got touched up for the second-most runs he has allowed this season.

The Panthers and Chargers will conclude their three-game series tomorrow (Apr. 28), with what is now a 1 p.m. game at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field in Garden City.
