Baseball Right In Thick of NE10 Southwest Division Pennant Hunt After Split With SNHU

Garden City, N.Y. - Although a seven-game winning streak came crashing down, the Adelphi University baseball team still earned a key split of a twinbill against Southern New Hampshire University on Sunday at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field.

With two conference series now remaining, the Panthers (20-16, 12-9 NE10) find themselves only a game back of Pace University for the NE10 Southwest Division lead.

Game 1: Adelphi 13, SNHU 7
A pair of lead-off walks in the third inning began to rattle SNHU starter Zach Brassill, who was eventually tagged with the loss in the decision.

After Joe Pellegrino went down on a controversial check swing for the first out of the inning, Albert Ramos and Jack Wishner answered with back-to-back RBI singles, putting the Brown and Gold back in front, 4-3.

As SNHU then went to its bullpen, Erick Duignan came through with a two-out, two-RBI single on an 0-2 pitch that grew Adelphi's lead to 6-3.

A dangerous team earning votes in this week's NCBWA Top 25 rankings, SNHU was unable to find the tying run against Gavin Graff, who earned his second win in as many appearances.

While first working out of an inherited jam in the fifth, Graff preserved the hosts' lead with 2.1 dazzling frames. Making his second-consecutive bid for a save, Coleton Reitan ran into trouble, but -- despite hitting two batters upon taking the ball -- induced a crucial 6-4-3 double play and struck out NE10 home run leader Jorge Burgos to strand the tying run at third in the eighth.

A dropped fly ball in right by Anderson Moreno further undressed the Penmen in Adelphi's half of the eighth. Still searching for his first roundtripper on his home field, Albert Ramos drilled a three-run homer down the left-field line that broke the game open.

Previously entering the game in a save situation, Reitan -- now with a comfortable six-run cushion -- kept SNHU off the board in the ninth, putting him one save shy of the NE10 lead with six.

Game 2: Adelphi 3, SNHU 5
As both teams flirted with opportunities early, SNHU dropped the initial blow in the third, with Burgos beating Dawson Montesa with a two-out, two-RBI double that nicked the left-field line.

Reigning NE10 Pitcher of the Week Frankie DeMaro -- the NE10's leader in earned-run average -- pitched 3.2 scoreless, but narrowly came away unscathed in the first two innings.

Greyson Pizzonia was in the middle of all of it for the 'Cats. In the home half of the first, Pizzonia -- standing on second -- got the sign for a hit-and-run and turned for home on a ball hit in the 5-6 hole. SNHU's Dyrenson Wouters made a perfect unbalanced relay home to nab Pizzonia at the plate.

Then, in the second inning, Pizzonia came up with two in scoring position in a scoreless game, and flied out to right to neutralize the threat.

DeMaro gave way to Jake Risedorf with two outs in the fourth, and Risedorf took it the rest of the way home. While Pellegrino launched his ninth roundtripper of 2024 to get the 'Cats within 5-3, Risedorf -- facing Michael Robinson as the game-tying run -- ran the pitch in enough to induce a flyout from Robinson to end the game.

Head Coach Bill Ianniciello and the Panthers will travel to Flushing on Tuesday (Apr. 23) for a 3 p.m. first pitch at Queens College. Earlier this spring, the Panthers defeated the Knights, 9-5, in their first meeting in Garden City on Mar. 12.
