Hempstead, N.Y. - In its third contest this spring against a Division I opponent, the Adelphi University men's tennis team fell 5-2 to Hofstra University on Saturday at the Hofstra Tennis Courts.
Separated by nearly four miles on a trek down Hempstead Turnpike, the Panthers (8-3) and Pride (5-9) went head-to-head for the second-consecutive year.
The doubles point was decided in a tiebreak at No. 1 doubles, where
Thomas Horsley and
Marko Jovanovic prevailed by a nailbiting 8-6 decision.
Adelphi had to work its way back to win the doubles point, after first falling at No. 3 doubles.
Hugo Munoz Reinoso and
Reece Farrow came through with a 6-3 victory at second doubles.
Hofstra was a tough test to overcome in singles though. The Pride lost one game in four of the six sets played at the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 flights.
With only one dual loss on his 2023-24 singles register,
Marko Jovanovic captured his fourth-consecutive No. 1 singles victory in straight sets, winning 7-5, 6-4.
Jovanovic's result wasn't enough to turn it around for Adelphi, which surrendered the clinching point at No. 6 singles in a hard-fought 4-6, 6-7 (6-8) result.
As the calendar now flips to April, the Panthers will travel to Worcester, Mass. next Saturday (Apr. 6) for a 1 p.m. NE10 match at Assumption University.
