Baseball Drops Late-Night Extra-Inning Affair to Open 2024 Campaign, 6-5

Myrtle Beach, S.C. - In a game that started four hours later than originally anticipated, the Adelphi University baseball team went into the late hours of the night in a 6-5 extra-inning Opening Day loss to Post University on Friday at the Ripken Experience.

With a steady dose of rain falling on Myrtle Beach, the Panthers (0-1) and Eagles (3-5) were moved back to a 9 p.m. start -- instead of their originally scheduled start time of 5 p.m.

The Panthers led at a couple different points in the contest, but it was Post's Evan Cornwell who delivered the game-winning single off Zach Rovner in the bottom of the tenth.

Adelphi still managed to rally for a late lead against the Post bullpen. First, Alec Maag leveled the score at 4-4 in the seventh with his solo homer to right. Then, in the eighth, L.J. Bohne drove in classmate Albert Ramos from third for the go-ahead run. A failed pick-off attempt moved Ramos into scoring position in one fell swoop.

With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Post's D.J. Caron tied things up with his RBI double off graduate reliever Steven Proko.

Proko pitched well in relief of John Carver, who made his first collegiate start and struck out a career-high seven batters. Proko followed that outing with four innings of five-hit, two-run, four-strikeout ball. Coleton Reitan added a scoreless 1.1 on the bump.

The Brown and Gold did fall into a quick 2-0 hole, before Joe Pellegrino's solo roundtripper and Ramos' two-RBI double put the 'Cats in front 3-2 in the fourth.

Between the No. 3 through No. 7 spots in the lineup, the heart of the Adelphi order produced a 9-for-23 (.391) night with four runs scored, two homers and three RBIs.

Head Coach Bill Ianniciello and his Adelphi squad now have a quick turnaround to prepare for a 4:30 p.m. doubleheader tomorrow (Feb. 24) against Mercy University in Myrtle Beach.
