Garden City, N.Y. - With a total of eight different point-earners, the no. 6 Adelphi University women's lacrosse program opened the season with an 18-7 victory over Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday.
This marks the 20th season, since the program's inception in 2002, that the team has opened up with a win.
After the Redhawks (0-1) scored the game's opening tally, the host team rattled off three straight goals, finishing with
Marielle Colalillo's first in the Panther uniform. Before the opening quarter was through, the game experienced two ties, but
Danielle Marino's first of three scores was the eventual strike from which Adelphi never looked back.
Adelphi scored on every man-up possession they had, which ended up occurring three times for the contest, and were nearly perfect on clears, at an 18-for-21 clip.
With a 4-1 edge in the second, the home team held a 9-5 advantage heading into the locker room. The Redhawks managed two in the third but were unable to cut into the deficit.
Kelly-Ann McGrath, who finished with four goals on the day, scored half of them in the final quarter, while first year
Payson Hedges led the team with seven points, courtesy of three goals and four assists. Defensively five different players posted caused turnovers, while
Jillian McFadden earned her first collegiate victory between the pipes, finishing with six saves.
Head Coach
Pat McCabe, entering his 10th season at the helm, and the team will trip to sunny Florida for two game starting in Sunday, Feb. 25. They will take on Florida Southern and the University of Tampa before returning to play at East Stroudsburg on Mar. 9.
