Garden City, N.Y. — On Wednesday night, head coach Gary Book and the Adelphi men's soccer team hosted Senior Night for their six outstanding seniors: Vaclav Borovicka, Pablo Ablanedo, Pablo Herrera, Lucas Nicolaou, Callum Walmsley and Rory Duggan.
After the festivities ended, the Panthers, who had already clinched a spot in the Northeast-10 tournament, still had an important match to play against New Haven to determine seeding.
The Chargers started the game off with a bang, drilling the crossbar with a shot from outside the box in just the third minute. Herrera would try and quickly respond with a shot of his own, but it was whisked away by the New Haven keeper.
Adelphi would threaten yet again less than twenty minutes later with shots from Herrera, Richard DeBrosse and Vaclav Borovicka but they were all stopped by the New Haven goalie.
For the remainder of the half, both teams would try to get past the other's defense but to no avail, as there was only one more shot by New Haven before both squads went into the half scoreless.
The second period started off a bit slow before the Chargers threatened with a quick attack that was thwarted by Santiago Arango. The 'Cats would respond but once again were stopped at the doorstep.
Adelphi would continue to be the aggressor on the offensive yet, but could not finish. In the 88th minute a ball sent into the Chargers' end was corralled by a New Haven defender before he launched the ball to a free attacker who would make one Panthers miss before beating Arango and giving New Haven a 1-0 win at the death.
The Panthers finished the regular season with a final record of 9-5-3, 4-3-2 NE10 and placed fourth in the conference. They will begin postseason play on Saturday when they host No. 5 Bentley at 7 p.m. on Motamed Field
